Question 2

Imagine Great Falls 20 years in the future and all of your hopes for the city have been realized.
What has changed?
How is our city a better place?

  1. Traffic on 10th Avenue has been decreased with some sort of alternate route and the lower north & south sides no longer have unoccupied and/or decrepit structures. There is adequate employment opportunities to keep young people from leaving.

  2. Downtown will be a great place to go again. It will no longer be desolate in the evenings. There will be outdoor cafes in which you can have a glass of wine or beer and a meal if you wish. If you want to catch a movie and dinner you can do so in one spot - downtown. You will no longer have to drive all over town for one evening of fun.

The community will no longer be stagnate - more young people will be here with a new mind set willing to change and grow.

  3. Large trucks will have a designated route, therefore opening up less frustrating traffic situations.
Movie theaters in the downtown area. Not so many casinos throughout the city.
More utilization of train service. Maybe even actual passenger trains! Expanded bus service - and make them smaller & more gas efficent.

  4. I agree, downtown will be the hot place in town. And there will no longer be any "sketchy" neighborhoods.

  5. I envision a city with lots of beautiful parks, an interconnected walking and biking path to provide alternates to driving places without compromising safety. The downtown will have street cafes and interesting stores, maybe even a department store again.

  6. People will want to invest in our communities. There will be an abundance of jobs and people will want to expand and develop.

  7. Great Falls is a more vibrant town with a kicking downtown shopping area and more restaraunts and bars along the waterfront. There are more young people and the community is progressing.

  8. Public transportation system within Great Falls, and that also connects with neighboring cities.

  9. Businesses are prospering along with the downtown area. Downtown has revitalized itself to be operating more than 8 to 5. Neighborhoods have cleaned themselves up so that citizens aren't fearful of traveling down certain streets at night. Housing is more affordable and dwellings are offering what prospective renters and buyers are looking for (not some landlord/seller with an over-priced dwelling for rent/sale). Both colleges have expanded. The area north of town has expanded with more busineses and is thriving. There are more events in Great Falls to draw in people throughout Montana as well as to entertain the residents of Great Falls and the surrounding area.

  10. There'll be more well paying jobs in town. Great Falls will have reversed the population growth stagnation that's been going on for 40 years.

  11. 10th Avenue South will have very little truck traffic account of the bypass built several years ago. Downtown will be the new hot spot because of the revival of new cafes unique stores and friendly pubs and finally it's own local brewery which will coincide with its rich brewing tradition we've had in Great Falls past.
The River's Edge Trail will be paved in cement for a longer lasting and smoother surface and have several new non-motorised accesses to the rivers for people to paddle, row or just hang out on the small nicely landscaped beaches.
Winter activities in Great Falls will include cross country skiing, sledding, snow shoeing and Gibson Park will once again be rediscovered for it's ice skating because the city will actually flood the pond correctly to make it a smooth and pleasant experience.

  12. A more vibrant downtown with the help of a Montana Main Street program and full-time coordinator. All of the great, historic apartment buildings and duplexes are restored. Great Falls has the best collection of historic multi-family homes in the state. 10th Street Bridge is completely repaired and used as a pedestrian bridge connecting riverfront trails.

  13. 40th Avenue South is extended to Fox Farm Road & 57th Street South & turned into a 4 lane highway. The NE Bypass (River Dr. N.) is also turned into a 4 lane highway from 15th Street N. to 57th Street N. Driving on 10th Avenue South has become a pleasant experience.

  14. BOTH High Schools are leading the state in athletics, scholarship, student achievment.. not just one. There needs to be more parity and attention to BOTH High Schools. Tenth Avenue is tree lined and landscaped and resembles some of the other routes in town, 15th, 16th. Casinos and blighted areas near 10th and Central West are GONE. Benefis has bought all the blighted properties around it, the casinos, the palm trees hi-ho, the biker bar, the seedy motel, and has put high tech medical offices and made it a beautiful medical complex. Central West is vibrant; Downtown is full of retail and condo-loft and real restaurants, not just hot dog places. Casinos, pawn shops, and check cashing places are gone- hopefully marijuana places won't be the next blight on the community.

  15. In 20 years Great Falls will have a more diversed economy; an larger trails system connecting all major community areas; both Sun and Missouri River banks cleaned up with healthy riparian vegetation replacing junk; a open space cooridor remaining along the rivers for everyone to enjoy; and a place where people enjoy moving to for work, scenery and events.

  16. Great Falls major growth will be aimed inward, instead of out, taking advantage of infill projects and developments while keeping our cities small-town-feel. We will maintain the ease of getting out into the beautiful Montanan countryside by not invading it with massive cookie-cutter projects, but by maintaining our current urban context by redeveloping and restoring. It will be a city that appreciates its urban context and its natural setting by keeping them separate and not sprawling into each other. It will be a city with a strong heart and downtown with trouble free public transportation to get people to work and play. The city will have a well built river front and trail where people can shop, eat, people watch, and stroll through. The city will be an active and interconnected place where people come to Montana not just for the amazing landscape, but to live in the respected urban context of Great Falls.

  18. I WOULD LOVE TO SEE GREAT FALLS AS A REALLY BIG CITY LIKE SPOKANE AND SALT LAKE CITY, AND MORE FACTORIES BUILT FOR BETTER FUTURE FOR J0BS.

  19. Population is only slightly larger, but business is noticeably stronger due to tourism. The former Malmstrom AFB is the new up-and-coming neighborhood for affordable living. Young families and elderly citizens reside there. One centerpiece of the community is the SpaceWing (nuclear missile) Museum drawing tourists from around the world. Stay overnight in a converted silo on the prairie (very exclusive!). Take the bus tour “Ring of Silos” to visit and learn about the cold war. Tour ends back at the SpaceWing Museum where there are interactive exhibits, such as model Launch and Command Consoles where little kids can turn keys, press buttons, and pretend to blow up the world. In the evening take in fine dining and dancing, river-side at the Holman Warehouse, or high at the Skyline, down at The Breaks or a few other interesting places. Fifties-style burger diners and malt shops are trendy for lunch. The SpaceWing Museum replaces some of the jobs lost by BRAC conversion and the rest are more than replaced by light industry such as a wind-generator maintenance facility, central processing headquarters for a tele-commuter work distribution company, micro-brewery, “green” construction company, bio-materials research facility or such like. There is no single “park” for such industries – they are scattered about the county driving the zoning board crazy. Community gardens have really become popular and every school and city park has one. The city and local nurseries jointly host gardening classes. More produce stands spring up. World’s oldest woman, Piano Pat, still sings at the Sip-n-Dip on Saturday night.

  20. Great Falls needs a bigger mall and better restaurants. I agree with a better downtown where there is a lot of things to do all in walking distance of one another.

  21. The economy will be much improved. There will be more job opportunities with more retail and eating establishments. The city will be open to growth and change and will either tear down or restore the older more run down establishments.
